Careers and Destinations

A fantastic Sixth Form education is the stepping stone to the next stage in your life; admission to a top university, apprenticeship and/or a successful career. At The Swan we will invest time in you to help you discover what you are passionate about, and then make this a reality.

All Swan Sixth Form students will also benefit from our higher education and careers provision, delivered as part of our extended daily tutor time. Our careers and pathways provision includes;

  • A dedicated tutor period each week on pathways guidance including university application support, careers and apprenticeships

  • Access to the Unifrog research tool offering advice, guidance and research in all aspects of UK and international universities, apprenticeships and career options

  • A series of weekly speakers throughout the year, from our student body, local links, outreach partners, parent/carer community and Swan alumni

  • Support with applying for work experience and volunteering placements and dedicated time in the timetable to complete these opportunities

  • Development of workplace skills and attributes in line with the Swan School values and through our Electives and Swan Leadership Programme

  • An individual meeting with the Head of Sixth Form and a reference from the school to support their onward applications, and our Careers Counsellor as needed

  • Parent/carer support sessions including a dedicated UCAS Parent Event

Once students have decided what they want to do, they will get individualised support to do this from their form tutor and the Sixth Form team to make their applications. We also run two university trips, one at the start of Year 12 and one during the spring term. Students making early applications to university for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Sciences or applying to Oxbridge have a bespoke programme from January of Year 12 to support their applications.

The majority of our students apply to UK universities. This year students have received offers for competitive universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Durham, Warwick and Edinburgh. The most popular university choices this year were Oxford Brookes, Exeter, Newcastle, Plymouth, Reading and Birmingham. The most popular course courses this year include Medicine, Law, Computer Science, Business and Economics and History.
