Electives & Enrichment
At The Swan School, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom.
Our Electives and Enrichment programme is designed to nurture the whole person by developing students’ curiosity, cultural capital, personal growth and social confidence. We are committed to ensuring that enrichment is an entitlement for all our students, rather than a privilege for some.
Each Tuesday, every student in KS3 and KS5 takes part in a compulsory Elective session and selects from a wide range of ambitious, inclusive activities spanning academic extension, arts and performance, community engagement, digital skills and sport - from participation to leadership pathways. Each cycle, students choose a new elective, creating a diverse, personalised enrichment journey that they can record in their Swan School Enrichment Passport. Through this rich and evolving offer, students are encouraged to step beyond their comfort zone, explore new interests and develop their passions. Throughout the week, an extensive programme of optional enrichment clubs further enhances their experience.
Together, Electives and Enrichment at The Swan empower young people to build skills, confidence and a strong sense of community.

A typical Elective lesson at The Swan is vibrant, student-centred, and shaped by genuine enthusiasm. Each session begins with a clear introduction to the day’s focus, whether students are mastering a new skill, exploring a creative project, learning a language, rehearsing a performance, or working collaboratively on a challenge. Students learn by doing: they experiment, practise, create, and take ownership of their progress.
Electives are deliberately mixed-year and mixed-ability settings, allowing students to learn from one another and build confidence in a supportive environment. Staff design engaging, purposeful activities that promote curiosity, resilience, and independence. By the end of each session, students leave with a sense of achievement and enjoyment - whether they have tried something completely new or deepened an existing passion.
Each term, the cycle of new choices keeps learning fresh, exciting, and full of opportunity.
